Four First Place Finishes at Head of the Schuylkill
Utah Crew competed this weekend at the 54th annual Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, PA. This year’s race competitors were from 282 rowing clubs across the US and seven countries with 2274 boats racing. The racecourse is 2.5 miles along the tree-lined Schuylkill River, finishing just upstream of historic Boathouse Row. Utah Crew won four of the eight events entered and finished third in a fifth. This was Utah Crew’s second trip to Head of the Schuylkill where their previous best finish was fifth place in the Women’s Varsity High School Quad.
The weekend started with Eden Fisher of Park City taking first place in the Women’s Collegiate Single Scull with a time of 16:31.6. Conditions were challenging with rough water on Saturday due to a 15 mph cross tail wind. Edie had rowed with Utah Crew’s High Performance Camps in the summers of 2023 and 2024 and returned to row with Utah Crew while taking a gap year after graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy this past spring.
On Sunday conditions were perfect with temperatures in the 50s and a light tail wind. Utah Crew’s entry in the Men’s High School Double Scull (Frosh/Novice) of Riley Cook (Senior – Farmington HS) and Tadd Snowder (Junior – Hillcrest HS) took first place with a time of 14:38.0. The Women’s High School Double Scull (Frosh/Novice) of Tayte Swenson and Libby Anderson (both Seniors at Park City HS) won their event with a time of 16:22.9.
Utah Crew’s Women’s Varsity Quadruple Scull finished first out of a field of 27 entries with a time of 14:03.1 and won the Paul Coomes Cup. The boat was comprised of Emily Hilker (Senior – Highland HS), Elena Guevera (Senior – West HS), Tate Horsley (Senior - East HS), and Roisin Knor-Brogran (Senior – West HS). Roisin deftly steered around two boats that had collided in front of her just 200 meters before the finish line. The entry in the Women’s JV Quad finished third, although that result is under protest as the winning crew did not follow entry rules. Utah Crew’s JV boat of Katherine Parker (Freshman – West HS), Audrey Goodworth (Sophomore – Brighton HS), Regina Englund (Junior – Skyline HS), and Emily Maughan (Senior – Highland HS) had a time of 14:44.0, 9/10th of a second behind powerhouse Row America Rye in second place.

Utah Crew Wins Two Medals at Regionals and Qualifies Two Boats for Youth Nationals
May 6, 2024
Utah Crew competed this weekend at the 2024 USRowing Southwest Youth Championships, winning two medals and qualifying two boats for the 2024 Youth National Championships. Thirty-three teams from across the Southwest competed in the Southwest Championships held on Lake Natoma in Sacramento CA from May 3 through May 5. This was Utah Crew’s best showing ever at the regional championships, advancing all nine entries out of the preliminary round, winning two bronze medals and earning automatic qualification for two boats to the USRowing Youth National Championships.
Single sculler Cristobal Verdugo, an exchange student from Chile currently attending West High School, finished fourth in the time trial with 14 boats advancing to semifinals. He finished second in his semifinal and third in the final, winning a bronze medal with a time of 7:56.98, only 0.12 seconds out of second place. Cristobal also earned an automatic entry to Youth Nationals.
The Men’s Club Four with Coxswain of Edwin Lowsma (Park City HS), Stefan Neugebauer (West HS), Riley Cook (Farmington HS), Santiago Trias (East HS) and coxswain Ella Barrow (Highland HS) finished first in their time trial and third in the final. These bronze medals were the first medals won by Utah Crew at the USRowing Southwest Championships.
The Men’s Under 17 Quadruple Scull of Shaler Mahan (Rowland Hall), Tagg Perreca (Skyline HS), Frederick Neugebauer (West HS) and Kavi Agarwal (Judge Memorial) came third in their time trial. After severe weather caused cancellation of the majority of the Saturday semifinals, the Utah Crew quad rowed to a fourth place finish in the final, just out of the medals but earning a bid to Youth Nationals.
The 2024 USRowing Youth National Championships are being held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota Florida June 6 through June 9.
